Down with Geometry Dash!! -- a petition and accompanying scenario

Posted by Troisnyx - January 25th, 2017

Do you folks ever remember a time when Geometry Dash really made NG musicians flourish? No, I don't either.

I know I haven't been posting much due to my state of mind and my circumstances, which have made me worse for wear. But now that I am putting up a frontpage post for this, I think it's time to address something that has been eating away at NG for three years now.

We moderators and regulars of the audio portal have had to deal with this... cancer, there is no other way to put it... since Geometry Dash's release. You know the drill, what the vast majority of these users do:

  • They treat off-brand and new artists on Newgrounds like shit.
  • They harrass well-established musicians on Newgrounds, like @Waterflame, @Xtrullor and @ThisIsTheFatRat, pressing them to enable download on ALL their songs or make them available for use on Geometry Dash.
  • They don't treat music as an art form, but instead treat it like some sort of commodity.
  • They flood the Audio Portal with Skrillex, MLG, Five Nights at Freddy's, and a whole host of songs made by others which they do not have rights to.
  • They impersonate well-established artists on Newgrounds and outside, just so that they could have their songs played in Geometry Dash. @Rukkus suffered the same treatment recently, with a user pretending to be him going by the name of @sukkur. We've also had people impersonating Pegboard Nerds, @OfficialPandaEyes, @ThisIsTheFatRat (which prompted him to make a page here on this site), Xtrullor, and even J- and K-pop artists.
  • Once banned, they revenge flag users' legitimate songs (yes!), but of course we moderators can see that what they're doing is a whole load of rubbish and that gets undone very quickly.
  • They fire off abusive comments on people's songs, and passive-agressive messges on people's inboxes. The relevant artists and moderators take the brunt of it, of course.

And why? Because they think they should be able to steal whatever they want just for their five minutes of fun. Of course, all the moderation on Newgrounds is done by humans like you and me -- there are no bots that automatically give revenue to the people and parties whose rights are infringed.

I'll give you an example of the kind of mail we are given on a constant, along with a response I posted, for demonstrative purposes.

GD user whose name I will not disclose:

Hello! I would like to talk to you about other people's songs in ng. You say that we put other people's songs, and it's not a dump ng for songs that you want to see updates to Geometry Dash. But if not, our team and the GD robtop your website you would not have become popular ever! Your site no one knows except us! The same rukkus xtrullor and express our gratitude. I ask you to unlock and everyone who puts other people's songs. Waiting for your reply!

Troisnyx:

One: our site knows TheWeebl, James Lee, Egoraptor, the late Eddsworld, Chluaid, Waterflame, Xtrullor and F-777. We knew Alien Hominid, SexualLobster, Castle Crashers and Meat Boy, a good few of which have become actual MASS-SELLING CONSOLE TITLES. PS4 and Xbox 360. I go to Game and CEX and I still see the hard copies and gift vouchers for Newgrounds creations.

So don't be so fucking pretentious as to think that just because your precious little game has exploded in popularity that NG was never big. I got news for you buddy, NG was achieving big looooong before you guys showed up.

Two: Talking about Waterflame, Ruckus, Xtrullor. Let me give you a scenario.

You make music that you put hours into. Someone approaches you saying "let me put this in my game." You get the fans -- but not the money. RobTop doesn't fucking care about musicians like us. While the ad revenue is all going into HIS pocket, us musicians are getting absolutely ZERO.

Oh and, fans aren't gonna pay the bills. UNLESS they give the musicians their fair share of remuneration (hint: which they WON'T).

I might add that an ever increasing number of musicians here, including Waterflame and Envy, have now taken to performing rights societies in their respective countries to insulate themselves from people like you who think they can use their music for free without consequence, after all the hard work.

I am NOT going to unlock anyone's songs for Geometry Dash if they are not going to comply with NG rules. That is to say, if they didn't make it themselves, it does NOT BELONG HERE. End of story. And if you think RobTop is behind you on this one, you can go tell him to fucking stuff it.

A few months back, I remember saying in my newsposts that I was determined to start a petition calling for the removal of Geometry Dash from the Play Store and its Apple equivalent.

HERE IS THAT PETITION. SIGN THE SHIT OUT OF IT.

EDIT: While I am appreciative of all of you who supported me and others who are frustrated by this, I have an important update. @BrentHeMan in his comments has said that he is working on a solution with RobTop with regards to the mechanics of GD's audio share. I doubt anyone is ready to disclose what it is at the moment, and I understand. I just wish it was all disclosed earlier, and that our frustrations didn't have to explode -- because it's one thing going to the upper echelons, it's another thing when the rest of us are dealing with seemingly futile damage control.

I am going to mull over it, over the night, and probably table some recommendations tomorrow. If we reach an amicable solution (which I sincerely hope we do!), I will gladly void the petition, because the threat that we saw coming to NG will have been averted.

EDIT: Comments have told me that the game has effectively been removed from Steam, and some people are saying it's also been removed from the Play Store. I'm glad the petition has sent shockwaves pretty much everywhere, because it took this for not only the GD people to get pissy, but also for the NG staff to actually say SOMETHING with regards to where we are at with GD hotfixes.

Yes, you heard that right, hotfixes. It took something as extreme as a petition, which has been in the pipeline for six months, for things to finally get a fucking move on.

So calm yourselves down, the game is coming back eventually. As for when, it's anyone's guess. Us regulars and mods who deal with the strain day in, day out, consider this a victory of sorts. To be honest, I'm quite pleased. I don't miss it. But if it comes back, then I sincerely hope that it comes back in a way that actually gives respect to the users over here. Don't just think about RobTop and yourselves. Think about us lot too. Screwing people out of ad revenue and $ share which is rightfully theirs would not be allowed on Newgrounds, so it shouldn't be fine on GD either.

Oh and, the vitriol in the comments and on Twitter are proof enough as to just how toxic the GD community really is, it's proof enough for yourselves. And yes, sometimes I am pissed off enough to give off a few uncharitable responses too. At this point, I am sorry ONLY FOR THE UNCHARITABLE RESPONSES. I am not sorry for this petition. I have no regrets.

For all the comments related to my mother, my supposed voluntary lack of virginity or whatevs, there is always gonna be that one user in ten who has a modicum of common sense, even though they disagree. Keep being awesome.

Comments

@Troisnyx can you just jump out of the nearest 6+ story building so I can feel more satisfied with my life, you fucking female dog.

Oh no I won't. But you can feel free to do so if you like. :-)

Also, I am really sorry about what the cancerous community I'm part of has done to you and others. But there are other ways to solve this problem which would make both newgrounds and the gd community happy and satisfied.

No worries. RobTop and BrentHeMan are working on hotfixes. The game should not be down for TOO long. If anything, it sends a statement in all directions.

robtop doesnt get ad revenue from your newgrounds songs, in fact he doesn't put ads on the full version of geometry dash (which is the only rendition of the game where you can use newgrounds songs), lol. on the games where there are ads on it, there is no trace of newgrounds songs at all. so when you say "RobTop doesn't fucking care about musicians like us. While the ad revenue is all going into HIS pocket, us musicians are getting absolutely ZERO." you are shouting 100% incorrect things. also, he gets money from his game, not your music. people don't buy geometry dash for newgrounds music. they buy it for the game.

i would appreciate a response where you might be able to prove this wrong.

The free version of GD has ads, correct?
If an app has ads, it pays the creator, correct?

Now consider that the people who have the free version of GD are paying him ad revenue that is not going to NG artists via revenue share. While NG has this system in place on its own site, RobTop does not.

Also consider that this is a PAID game using free music. A lot of which does not allow commercial use when you look at the CC licence on the bottom left. RobTop is breaking the law.

@Troisnyx Also, you say "- They harrass well-established musicians on Newgrounds, like @Waterflame"
Waterflame's music is in the game you uneducated fuck, and from what I've seen they do not harass them you fucking cunt, by the way, why did your dad's condom break while having sex?

so heres my third and last comment:
personally, i disagree with @troisnyx but what i dont like it how both sides are hating towards each other and telling each other to kill themselves. this whole situation has caused a ton of drama that nobody wants. i think @troisnyx should take back a few things you said since they triggered a lot of people including me.

How To Destroy Your Reputation With Thousands Of People (who don't really use the site anyways but the way this has been handled is extremely childish for both you and them) 101

So you think our community is cancer. You are wrong. And you are an idiot.

I'm Fabman650, one of the more recognized members of our community. You, my friend, are an arrogant, clueless little bitch because you disagree with the way our community behaves. How can you judge a community that you have not been a part of whatsoever? You have no right to get the game that some of us have been playing for over three years taken down completely just because YOU think that our community is cancerous, and that you disagree with it. You have no fucking right to do so.

You should get to know our community. Sure, there are times when our community is "cancerous" by your standards, and I can totally understand why you would call it "cancer" at some stages. However, what you are doing is generalising our community. That is not right whatsoever, and you should be ashamed. To say that everybody in our community is cancerous and bullies well known producers for their music is like saying that all Muslims are "radical Islamic terrorists". Both statements are simply not true. Our community respects your producers and their music as much as some of your producers respect our game and our community. Waterflame for example has made numerous tracks for Geometry Dash and has had many of his tracks used in official levels made by RobTop, WITH HIS PERMISSION. It's obvious that he has no problem with the GD community whatsoever. Producers like Boomkitty and MafiaPineapple have also come to GD streams and expressed their love for GD rather than thei hatred.

Let me just quote one of your points here:

"They impersonate well-established artists on Newgrounds and outside, just so that they could have their songs played in Geometry Dash. Rukkus suffered the same treatment recently, with a user pretending to be him going by the name of "sukkur". We've also had people impersonating Pegboard Nerds, OfficialPandaEyes, ThisIsTheFatRat (which prompted him to make a page here on this site), Xtrullor, and even J- and K-pop artists."

This is NOT relevant to why GD is "cancer" by your standards whatsoever. You have no proof that these "fake accounts" are members of the GD community, there is no proof of that. These accounts could have been made by people who simply want producers outside of NG to have their music featured on this glorious website. To say that the GD community has something to do with these accounts is stupid, because you simply have no proof of that idea.

The main thing that triggers me about this is that you have taken it apon yourself to take this game down. You have no right. Just because you disagree with the way our community works, does not give you the right whatsoever to get it taken down. What you are doing here is branding our community as "cancerous" when you don't know shit about it whatsoever. You're basing your arguments on what is going on with NG and some of our community members. Lemme tell you one thing. We're only talking about a handful of people, not the entire community. You're trying to take this game down because a HANDFUL of people have been pressuring your producers into making more music for GD rather than the intended NG audience. I can understand that, and I apologize on behalf of the GD community that it has happened to people like @Xtrullor . However, this is not a reason to take down our game.

Lemme quote another one of your main points:

"They flood the Audio Portal with Skrillex, MLG, Five Nights at Freddy's, and a whole host of songs made by others which they do not have rights to."

Back at it again with the generalisation. This is not limited to the GD community whatsoever. If GD gets banned and the community dies, this will still be a problem in your community. There will still be people in the community posting shit that they don't have the rights to post. It's how the internet works, it's not limited to our community in general.

Finally, I've heard that you've resorted to mass-flagging GD in order to get it removed. Lemme tell you one thing. That is borderline immature and shows complete hypocrisy on your part. How can you call our community cancerous when you have resorted to mass-flagging our game so that Steam will remove it from their stores (which they have done already), instead of simply using legal means in order to get it removed, civilly and maturely? You are an idiot and a hypocrite, and you are just as bad as you think we are.

This is your last point, just gonna slam this one too:

"They don't treat music as an art form, but instead treat it like some sort of commodity."

Why the fuck do you think that that is a reason to remove GD? You think that GD is cancer because some of us don't view music as "art". That's not necessarily a point, is it? That's like a cop going up to a group of black people and saying "I'm gonna arrest you all because you're black."

This is all I have to say on the matter. You are basing your arguments on this generalisation in your head that we are all cancerous because a handful of people in our community have been doing some fucked shit. You're a fucking idiot.

@Troisnyx narcissistic cunt

@troisnyx "How is it like to not have a game you like because a good number of you took us lot for a ride?" Nice dodging the question. I wasn't talking about GD being removed from steam, that most likely has nothing to do with NG at all. Seeing as your petition only had what, 100 signatures? To take down a game that tens of millions play? Anyhow, my question was more about the purpose of the petition. Just to ask another question, seeing as you most likely have not played the game, I'll tell you how something works in it. To use a song and have it downloadable the artist needs to be scouted on NG. Now, why would we have a problem with songs getting put on NG where you can download them if you need to be scouted on NG? The people that are pirating the songs are people from GD, though I don't think people would be so drawn to do it if it wasn't so easy. Solution: Don't make it so easy! Wow, a solution other than destroying the game of one your partnerships? Amazing.

I like it how you completely ignore me.
By the way, I have reported you, and your "petition" for hate speech, as it is clearly that, and I also noted that GD on steam is not down, but merely suspended for a while, while the mods review what is happening.

I suspect the game be back up in a few days, and Android and Google Play ignoring what is happening.

Good day

-whamer100

@Troisnyx This is the last time I freak out, but why don't you try making a game, see how well that goes for you, honestly I'd love to see you fail to even promote it.

Too late, the game I made is Positive! Haw haw

the second part i guess im satisfied with, but the first part about newgrounds artists having a supposed "revenue share" isn't really making much sense to me. the free version and full version are two different games, and the only game that has any affiliation with newgrounds music is the full version. although the two games are directly related and one is basically a version of the other, they are two different apps. why should newgrounds artists get any revenue from the free version of the game where they provide nothing in it? sure you might deserve some credit from people buying the full version as a one-time payment, but why the ads from the free version?

nonetheless in my opinion hopefully there'll be some sort of resolution and the game comes back to the steam store somehow.

@troisynx I sent you a PM about this, but after reading the warzone that is these comments I think it's necessary to post it here.

"Hi,
My name is Megaman9 and I'm a co-owner of the Geometry Dash Forums. I saw your petition on change.org and I felt that I needed to talk to you.
First of all, I saw that you said this:
-----
'Does Geometry Dash have its own forum for its players?
If so, what I'd like is for the legit GD players / music uploaders over here to liaise with the rest of the GD community. Perhaps we're only dealing with a fraction of bad apples. Perhaps the entire community is bad, but with pockets of good and law-abiding people. We don't know.
We'll only know their attitudes by talking with them, asking them questions. Like, 'why do you do this when X rule states that?' Or 'If you like Geometry Dash so much, why aren't you paying attention to what RobTop really wants?' Their reactions to these questions will determine just what kind of fanbase this game is attracting, and how much (or how little) we have to brace ourselves for damage control.'
-----
- Like I said, I'm a co-owner of the forums, so yes :P (www.gdforum.freeforums.net)
- The GD community is pretty infamous, but it's not ALL bad. If you look at this thread I made about your petiton to spread awareness (http://gdforum.freeforums.net/thread/41761/petition-remove-gd-app-store) you'll see that a lot of people are as disgusted with the community for doing this to ourselves and Newgrounds as you are. The forums are known for being one of the best parts of the community. However, you'll also see some of the 'bad apples' of the community in that thread.
I don't know how much you know about GD, so here is some background information on the song stealing.

Update 1.9: This is when RobTop first allowed GD creators to use Newgrounds songs. This is before artist scouting existed, so people were uploading others' songs like crazy. Even some of the most popular levels use copyrighted/stolen songs (like the level Theory of Skrillex, which uses Skrillex music). Other popular artists who were stolen from/had songs reuploaded are Virtual Riot, Knife Party, and TheFatRat (before he made his NG account). Once those songs were banned, people began asking song artists to upload on Newgrounds so they could use their stuff in Geometry Dash. Some, like TheFatRat and DEAF KEV, didn't mind, but major artists like Skrillex couldn't be contacted (obviously) so those songs are no longer usable.

Update 2.0: Somewhere in here is when scouting became a thing. A lot of new song artists were also discovered in this update, like Spaze, DEAF KEV, Azazal, BoomKitty, and Dex Arson. To this day, a lot of their songs are used in a LOT of Geometry Dash levels.

Update 2.1 came out about 1-2 weeks ago, so I can't really say anything about it yet.

I also know about the Geometry Dash comments on reviews. Trust me, most of the community is NOT happy about that, especially when they constantly see GD comments on songs that they like. It's almost unavoidable.

So yeah. Hopefully that helped.

...however, I must say that I think taking the ENTIRE Geometry Dash game down because of this is overboard. I heard RobTop is working on something with Newgrounds to fix this (My personal suggestion is to have a "usable in GD" setting that an artist can enable or disable on their songs). You can cut yourself off from Geometry Dash if you want and I assure you that...MOST of the community would understand. The "good apples" would. But taking down the whole game...? I'd only do that as a 100% last resort. If you think RobTop isn't listening, he definitely will now since the game is removed from Steam. He ignores a lot of the GD Community too, and trust me, we all know how annoying it is, but eventually he pulls through. Just give him some time.

In addition, there are a lot of artists that love Geometry Dash and embrace its community, such as DJ-Nate, Waterflame, and Dex Arson. There are also more unknown artists who hope to get popular through the game. What would happen to them?

Soooooo...yeah, that's my message to you. Thanks in advance for reading, and if you want to talk to me easier you can add me on Discord at Megaman9#2897.
Looking forward to your response!
~ megaman9"

Wow. I don't think I've ever seen such an immense amount of hatred in a single NG post. It's honestly sad. I hope you all realize this doesn't help anyone, nor your cause.
And I want to say as well that a petition with 100 signatures isn't going to do anything to a game that sold millions either. Nor is mass-flagging it. (people can still play GD dude)

This is honestly just childish, from both sides here. I'm disappointed that people decided to take this route instead of just being reasonable.
I'm not going to start arguing here, but just know that I hate the route people took in this argument that shouldn't have turned into drama city.

Sadly in the Geometry Dash community little kids steal songs from artists and bully them constantly, and I hate that so much, but it doesn't mean it's the entire community, I mean the community is mostly filled with immature 6-11 year olds needing these songs in this game and they don't realize the crap that's going on, and I can understand the anger of the creators. I've found so many good artists in GD, and once I quit the game and rid myself from the toxic community, i would like to continue supporting these amazing artists who sadly get all this bs by the young part of this toxic, cancerous community, and some times the more mature part of this community who just don't understand the consequences of stealing songs just for it to be on their game.
Now you're hearing this from a player who has been playing GD even BEFORE Newgrounds has been implemented into the game, although I like all these amazing songs, I just hate how kids just to ruin it all for the rest of us. I don't wish to see Newgrounds be removed, but the security of songs being uploaded for geometry dash be heavily inspected to see if it has been stolen or not, but people have realized no matter what website you're on, songs are being stolen and reuploaded every single day.
I believe that we could change how newgrounds songs are added to geometry dash, like add a verified symbol to creators who have uploaded their own songs, and then only verified creators can have their songs added to geometry dash, I believe this could be a great solution for stolen songs being added to geometry dash itself, then more inspection of people uploading songs to see if they've been stolen or not.
Sincerely, a Geometry Dash player with actual sense with the situation that is going on.
P.S I hope this is a great idea to get this petition to go away, thank you for reading through this and have an amazing day you guys.

Tbh this is getting REALLY chidlish (on both sides). And I'm talking about boths sides here. @Troisnyx as much as you may deny it MANY of us GD players want this to be resolved. We don't like song stealing either because it gives us a bad reputation. But your acting rash and childish at this point. Like seriously? Mass flagging? Your "us or them" mentality comes across as hostile. If you were to come up with a reasonable plan to help stop song stealing, me and many others would be on your side. A few months ago, when NG added the banner to stop song stealing, someone made a post on the GD forums about it. In that post, EVERYONE was on the side of NG. Everyone. But still, you ignore all the GD players on your side. We all want a solution, but you've escalated the situation further then it ever needed to be. It almost makes me think you're doing it on purpose in order to bait reactions out of diehard fanboys so you can use it as a defense for your unreasonable claims. You overgeneralize, jump to extremes, and mass flag. You focus in on the people and situations that prove your points but ignore all the ones that don't. In my oppinion, you're acting nearly as immature as the people you want to get rid of.

Looking back at what you guys said,it's just dumb. Guess what? NG doesn't have ad revenue, which makes this whole thing hilarious. And Geometry Dash is only there because people want to play a game, not because they want to steal songs. You're pretty pessimistic on this one, since you're COMPLETELY ignoring the fact that there's some specific artists that grew throughout the game like AcidNation.
If you think this'll stop people stealing songs and uploading them here, that just makes things more laughable. Do you understand how ridiculous you sound now? If not, here's some more to add to this.
When RobTop added custom songs, people were actually reviving this site. You guys barely even care about this fact, the petition is more important.
Copyrighted material uploaded here could still be uploaded by people EVEN WITHOUT THE GAME. There's no point in just getting this game out of the store, just like you're just doing. It's really dumb, and there's no real aim for this.

I understand the harassing situations, especially with @Xtrullor since he explained it to us. Us players who have an actual brain and know how to use it properly understood the situation and I actually wanna give him a hand, but I wouldn't really make a difference.

Ever wonder why GD makes people popular when a level blows up? We only have NG as the source of music for custom songs. The petition is just dumb. Removing a game because of some copyrighted material? If this petition completely succeeds, you should explain to me why is the How To series by GHS removed from NG,when that's actually a remake/cover.

You're mindlessly acting like psychopaths over a 4-dollar game, are you serious? Now,to not sound like a hypocrite,I wouldn't be here if it wasn't YOU who ruined this update. You ruined your whole reputation, and are just going to cause more chaos. Grow up,guys. I'm just a normal user on NG now since a long while ago,but you're the guys with more power. Don't be selfish and destroy other people's actual wish to play this game because of some copyrighted material on this site just for the sake of your happiness. Celebrating over a 4-dollar game's removal is actually pretty fucking stupid, these are my raw words in this sentence. That's like shutting down NG because Google hates this site, and you'd be pissed off at Google because their action was dumb and that's what you're really doing.

Good day,and use your brains.

I don't side either place, but you do realize the petition nonsense and all this NG drama isn't even why GD was taken down in the first place, right? It got struck by Nintendo and is bound to be back up soon.

@KatsuTG The reason it got a strike is allegedly because of mass flagging. Can be seen here https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/272517064860762122/275732222357536769/image.png

@katsutg Proof of that?
