Sanding and staining did fix *most* of the work -- some of the old red roundel couldn't be removed, but we're still using that as the centre of the pattern anyway. Hopefully it won't be noticeable.

That was some kind of nightmare, I'm sure.
Painting real, material objects of curved shapes is never easy.

It isn't, I suppose -- but sanding it down gave it that sort of rustic look, which we now have second thoughts about going back to, and staining it somewhat restored it. I never know till I try, I suppose. : )
