Down with Geometry Dash!! -- a petition and accompanying scenario

Posted by Troisnyx - January 25th, 2017

Do you folks ever remember a time when Geometry Dash really made NG musicians flourish? No, I don't either.

I know I haven't been posting much due to my state of mind and my circumstances, which have made me worse for wear. But now that I am putting up a frontpage post for this, I think it's time to address something that has been eating away at NG for three years now.

We moderators and regulars of the audio portal have had to deal with this... cancer, there is no other way to put it... since Geometry Dash's release. You know the drill, what the vast majority of these users do:

  • They treat off-brand and new artists on Newgrounds like shit.
  • They harrass well-established musicians on Newgrounds, like @Waterflame, @Xtrullor and @ThisIsTheFatRat, pressing them to enable download on ALL their songs or make them available for use on Geometry Dash.
  • They don't treat music as an art form, but instead treat it like some sort of commodity.
  • They flood the Audio Portal with Skrillex, MLG, Five Nights at Freddy's, and a whole host of songs made by others which they do not have rights to.
  • They impersonate well-established artists on Newgrounds and outside, just so that they could have their songs played in Geometry Dash. @Rukkus suffered the same treatment recently, with a user pretending to be him going by the name of @sukkur. We've also had people impersonating Pegboard Nerds, @OfficialPandaEyes, @ThisIsTheFatRat (which prompted him to make a page here on this site), Xtrullor, and even J- and K-pop artists.
  • Once banned, they revenge flag users' legitimate songs (yes!), but of course we moderators can see that what they're doing is a whole load of rubbish and that gets undone very quickly.
  • They fire off abusive comments on people's songs, and passive-agressive messges on people's inboxes. The relevant artists and moderators take the brunt of it, of course.

And why? Because they think they should be able to steal whatever they want just for their five minutes of fun. Of course, all the moderation on Newgrounds is done by humans like you and me -- there are no bots that automatically give revenue to the people and parties whose rights are infringed.

I'll give you an example of the kind of mail we are given on a constant, along with a response I posted, for demonstrative purposes.

GD user whose name I will not disclose:

Hello! I would like to talk to you about other people's songs in ng. You say that we put other people's songs, and it's not a dump ng for songs that you want to see updates to Geometry Dash. But if not, our team and the GD robtop your website you would not have become popular ever! Your site no one knows except us! The same rukkus xtrullor and express our gratitude. I ask you to unlock and everyone who puts other people's songs. Waiting for your reply!

Troisnyx:

One: our site knows TheWeebl, James Lee, Egoraptor, the late Eddsworld, Chluaid, Waterflame, Xtrullor and F-777. We knew Alien Hominid, SexualLobster, Castle Crashers and Meat Boy, a good few of which have become actual MASS-SELLING CONSOLE TITLES. PS4 and Xbox 360. I go to Game and CEX and I still see the hard copies and gift vouchers for Newgrounds creations.

So don't be so fucking pretentious as to think that just because your precious little game has exploded in popularity that NG was never big. I got news for you buddy, NG was achieving big looooong before you guys showed up.

Two: Talking about Waterflame, Ruckus, Xtrullor. Let me give you a scenario.

You make music that you put hours into. Someone approaches you saying "let me put this in my game." You get the fans -- but not the money. RobTop doesn't fucking care about musicians like us. While the ad revenue is all going into HIS pocket, us musicians are getting absolutely ZERO.

Oh and, fans aren't gonna pay the bills. UNLESS they give the musicians their fair share of remuneration (hint: which they WON'T).

I might add that an ever increasing number of musicians here, including Waterflame and Envy, have now taken to performing rights societies in their respective countries to insulate themselves from people like you who think they can use their music for free without consequence, after all the hard work.

I am NOT going to unlock anyone's songs for Geometry Dash if they are not going to comply with NG rules. That is to say, if they didn't make it themselves, it does NOT BELONG HERE. End of story. And if you think RobTop is behind you on this one, you can go tell him to fucking stuff it.

A few months back, I remember saying in my newsposts that I was determined to start a petition calling for the removal of Geometry Dash from the Play Store and its Apple equivalent.

HERE IS THAT PETITION. SIGN THE SHIT OUT OF IT.

EDIT: While I am appreciative of all of you who supported me and others who are frustrated by this, I have an important update. @BrentHeMan in his comments has said that he is working on a solution with RobTop with regards to the mechanics of GD's audio share. I doubt anyone is ready to disclose what it is at the moment, and I understand. I just wish it was all disclosed earlier, and that our frustrations didn't have to explode -- because it's one thing going to the upper echelons, it's another thing when the rest of us are dealing with seemingly futile damage control.

I am going to mull over it, over the night, and probably table some recommendations tomorrow. If we reach an amicable solution (which I sincerely hope we do!), I will gladly void the petition, because the threat that we saw coming to NG will have been averted.

EDIT: Comments have told me that the game has effectively been removed from Steam, and some people are saying it's also been removed from the Play Store. I'm glad the petition has sent shockwaves pretty much everywhere, because it took this for not only the GD people to get pissy, but also for the NG staff to actually say SOMETHING with regards to where we are at with GD hotfixes.

Yes, you heard that right, hotfixes. It took something as extreme as a petition, which has been in the pipeline for six months, for things to finally get a fucking move on.

So calm yourselves down, the game is coming back eventually. As for when, it's anyone's guess. Us regulars and mods who deal with the strain day in, day out, consider this a victory of sorts. To be honest, I'm quite pleased. I don't miss it. But if it comes back, then I sincerely hope that it comes back in a way that actually gives respect to the users over here. Don't just think about RobTop and yourselves. Think about us lot too. Screwing people out of ad revenue and $ share which is rightfully theirs would not be allowed on Newgrounds, so it shouldn't be fine on GD either.

Oh and, the vitriol in the comments and on Twitter are proof enough as to just how toxic the GD community really is, it's proof enough for yourselves. And yes, sometimes I am pissed off enough to give off a few uncharitable responses too. At this point, I am sorry ONLY FOR THE UNCHARITABLE RESPONSES. I am not sorry for this petition. I have no regrets.

For all the comments related to my mother, my supposed voluntary lack of virginity or whatevs, there is always gonna be that one user in ten who has a modicum of common sense, even though they disagree. Keep being awesome.

Comments

So much salt, it's quite a site to behold honestly.

@s3rios Who posted that? RobTop or Steam? (It doesn't say in the picture :P)

Removing an app won't fix the problem by the way. Actually I think it'll make it much worse, after deleting a game that a huge community revolved in, they would resort to coming straight back here and making things worse, trying to get people to "Bring it back" If newgrounds wants to remove the agreement they made with Rob and it's staff they can, but otherwise this solution is downright ridiculous. What happens when another gaming community comes on and starts doing the same exact thing. Gonna ban them too?

@ZinkoDruru We'll use our brains when you learn to grow one <3

Rest in Peace GD, 2013-2017, my favourite game that i poured so much time, energy and effort in, i guess it is all crumbling down now, and the severe actions of a few can have such dire, dire consequences on the many (this works both ways btw)... i was starting to get so good, I was practicing Supersonic, hell maybe even beat it... i have plans to beat a demon on the list this year, my GD career would've started to take off, but alas, all my dreams and ambitions have been shattered. You NG community guys probably think i am a sad pathetic lonely nolifer spending so much time on a simple rhythm skill platform game, and you are probably right, but i enjoyed it so much, i loved the game. I understand why it has to be deleted, our community is toxic, I know, and we shouldn't deserve a game as good as it... but... idk. but one thing is for certain, when I load a game of league, or start up Osu!, or log into that WoW character, i will always think "I wish i was playing Geometry Dash right now", and i will sigh, maybe cry, and get on with making my existence just that little more exciting, which, from now on, will be so, sooo much more difficult.

Rest in Peace, Geometry Dash, i appreciate everything you did as a game, and the people iv'e met through you greatly, and i will hold these precious memories with me forever

Love, now and always, Stir Fry

Well, I was with NG on this one, but the majority of behavior from both sides at this point is just infantile. I'm ashamed.

I think NG should add a verification system for people who participate in the Audio Portal, the bad thing is it will negatively affect really inactive users (as @Dimrain47). Sorry for bad english, I'm most used to write in spanish to be honest

I can easily say I'm no longer associated with the Geometry Dash community. I saw things like this coming from a mile away and left. This post and petition still upset me, and I rarely play the game.

First of all, this is taking it a bit far. Yes, they steal music. Yes, they harass users. Yes, they have caused a lot of stress to people on this website, but now you're starting to do the same things right back to them. I'm assuming it was this post, or the general outcry that has started up recently that got Geometry Dash taken off Steam. Does that not ruin anything for them?

As much as I hate to pick on Xtrullor, he's done the same to them. His response to ayylmao1001 could technically be considered harassment. Although he may be justified, it doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. While it happens a lot in the world, people shouldn't go around getting even. If people did that all of the time, the world would probably be a lot worse. You can't get angry and rant about something and then dish it back out to the people you're angry at. Since that's making you even, the rant counts as a strike against you, while the others have none.

I'm not defending the Geometry Dash users by saying all of this. They can be a very nasty group to deal with. Trust me, I would know. I can almost promise I've gotten a hell of a lot more harassment than the users on here from the community. I still resent them, and I've ranted about it, but I've never attacked anyone from the group that wronged me.

At this point you can't really be angry at RobTop. He never said he supports what's happening to the users on here. In fact, he gets way more harassment than any of the users on this website do. You can't be mad at him for something he didn't do. If I remember correctly, you uploaded your music on this website without the promise of pay, no? I've gotten absolutely zero money from Newgrounds, and I'm more than okay with that. That's not to say that the people who run the website don't get any money. They do, and they're sure as hell not sharing it with any of us. If you don't expect them to, I don't know why you expect Rob to. You agreed to having Geometry Dash users be able to use your music without pay. Otherwise this would be an even bigger problem than it is already. You also can't just withdraw that. You can, with work, withdraw that, but not just because you feel like it. I'm going to use a bit of a strange example here, but I hope it'll still get the point across. Somebody can't give consent and then the morning after withdraw that consent. If you take that to a court, you will lose, plain and simple. Newgrounds is in a similar situation here.

I'm not going to say uploading material that doesn't belong to the uploader isn't a problem. It's a pretty big problem, and it has happened to me before, so I can sympathize with all of the people it has happened with. What I will say is that it has been a problem everywhere even before Geometry Dash. I'm sure YouTube deals with the same problem ten times more than Newgrounds. It may decrease, but it will still be a problem even if Geometry Dash is removed from the picture. Also, I feel that the majority of users who upload music that doesn't belong to them are either younger than ten or don't speak English very well, both of which would greatly impair their judgement or knowledge of what's right.

My last point is that you're really taking it too far with a petition. I doubt it will go through for Apple or Google, but that's not what I'm getting at. In this situation, everyone who has signed or will sign the petition is being selfish. You've turned it into a "me or them" situation, in which you've chosen yourselves. I mean, what if Geometry Dash users had a petition to get Newgrounds shut down? I have a feeling you wouldn't be very happy about that. I understand why you're frustrated, but I think right now your anger is affecting your judgement. Something can be worked out, I'm sure of it. This just seems like more of a knee-jerk response out of anger.

Think of the Geometry Dash community as a child. They are still learning and don't have the best decision-making skills. You all have to be the adult in this situation and have the self control to not strike back. I'm sure other (better) decisions can be made regarding this issue. I'd also advise that you think twice about this petition. If Geometry Dash does get removed and their access blocked to music like this, they will have everyone on this website's head for it. They may not be smart, but they can be very brutal. Don't take this lightly, I'm not joking.

Again, I'm not on the Geometry Dash community's side, but I feel like you guys are treating them unfairly. I would appreciate it if you would reconsider. Thanks.

-Kyron

Geometry Dash brought a lot of exposure to my stuff and a lot of other artists on this site :p I understand the negatives but you should look at the positives too. (though i will say i have gotten a lot of "duelo maestro" spam xp)

@krazyman50 I'm with you on that one

I'm a GD player myself, but i can't believe the community i'm in is so toxic against artists that deserve recognition and respect, and that they treat them with such hysterical and irrespectful manner... I can see your point, and i can agree on that. On a side note: I always wanted to be talented on making music like the artists most reffered on this post (Xtrullor and Waterflame), and maybe it's time to start praticing...

This marks the downfall of both sides.

Everyone is acting so uncivil. The author of this post has no need to curse out a bunch of children of age 12 and under, which is the majority of the scandals listed. This whole flame war and hate post is not necessary. Just inform Robert Topala about the situation and resolve it peacefully. No need to shout stuff like, "tell him to fucking stuff it" or "SIGN THE SHIT OUT OF IT". This post only fueled the flame of the subject, making both sides lose it.

Seriously, why can't we just resolve this like normal people and not savages. This is just creating a problem, not solving one.

@troisnyx I've been wanting to talk with you for a while. (I think you started the petition)

Frankly enough I don't know what you really expected when you created a "Remove GD From the App Store" Petition with a community that's been playing the game for 3+ years. Frankly enough its obvious you didn't spend any time finding out just exactly how much people have been dedicated to this game, nor did you even try to be civil with a punishment, instead you decided to be selfish and remove a game entirely with no regard for anybody else.

Geometry Dash has been out since 2013, and we've been aloud to use the music on Newgrounds since 2014. Since then, there have been players like RioT, Cyclic, Sunix, TrusTa, Krazyman50 etc. that have dedicated thousands of hours to this game, just so they could get good and beat some of the hardest levels around. To give you the idea:

RioT verified Bloodbath, a level that was #1 on the hardest levels list for a whole year, and for nine months of that year, it hadn't been beaten once besides by RioT, who spent three months to beat it himself after around 25,000 attempts. Another player, Cyclic, beat Cataclysm, a level originally thought to be impossible after around ~17,000 attempts. TrusTa did what Cyclic did, where he beat Sakupen Hell a level, again, thought to be impossible, after 20,000 attempts and constant playing of the game. He also beat the current hardest level of all time after four months of constant practice, and 50,000 attempts. Sunix verified a level called Sonic Wave, a level that managed to; make three people quit trying to beat it, and take 16 months to beat legitimately total. Even RioT couldn't beat it after 70,000 attempts, and it's almost the entire reason he quit. Krazyman50 did something similar to Sunix, where he beat a level that remained unbeaten for quite a long period of time, as well as his own levels that have remained in the top 10 for almost a full year. Then again there's also "creators". Those are the people who make levels, and they dedicate days, weeks, months of work just for people to play them. People, including myself, have spent hours, days, and weeks playing this game to become better at it (I have around 1650 hours on steam).

To decide to completely remove a game, and ask people to mass-flag it on steam was a terrible and irresponsible and immature way to deal with the situation. And honestly, I'm disappointed, especially if you're someone who's graduated highschool.

Okay, let me put it from our side of the story.

Do you all care about the fact that us musicians are pouring in hours of work, only to be greeted with a bunch of kids who think that if a song is not as good as Skrillex, they can 0-bomb it all they want?

Do you all care about the fact that we don't even get a single penny of ad revenue share or even the proceeds from our plays on Geometry Dash?

Do you care that some of our songs aren't even meant to be used commercially, and the fact that they are used in this game actually breaks the law?

Do you care that people are actually legit doing the things that they are doing, or even the vitriol that you see on your page?

I'm sorry, we have dealt with this for three years. It's time this changed.

Absolutely idiotic. Can I ask this simple question: where would half of these musicians be without GD? Look I get it...as a Geometry Dash player this community is annoying and selfish. RobTop isn't selfish which you've stated as a lie to support a blank cause. The few people who've signed this think they can take over and destroy a game of millions of players?! I think not.

But there was a thing you mentioned that I can agree with. With the GD community having toxicity influence, a lot of players have begun to ignore the people who've helped make the game what it was. I cannot simple let this go unnoticed...well now it's noticed. I don't agree with this thread, nor will it do anything. A few pesky creators who decide to try and overturn a community of millions is a sure fire way to get this situation worse. Nice job!

Oh. My. Fucking. God
I honestly thougt you would stop the GD cancer! BUT YOU ARE AS BAD AS THEM!
IT WOULD HAPPEN EVENTUALLY! Every day people harass famous people and musicians, share music illegally, and it's not the blame of a game, nor the community
IT'S YOUR FUCKING JOB TO MODERATE THOSE PEOPLE!
YOU AGREED WITH ROBTOP, OR EVEN IF NOT, THE GAME TELLS YOU ALL TYE COPYRIGHT STUFF!
Annoyed? PUT YOUR MUSIC ELSEWHERE!
I understand GD it's pure cancer, but you are worse
No brain at all to understand that it's not GD'S or RobTop's fault, It's the community
And you cannot stop the community, DUMBASS,
THAT'S WHY YOU MODS EXIST! TO NEUTRALIZE THE COMMUNITY! NOT TO WHINE AND CRY!

finally, i just have one more thing to say. just as newgrounds was flourishing before the introduction of newgrounds music into geometry dash, geometry dash was also flourishing before as well.

You are literally the most corrupt moderator I have seen in my years. Clearly suggesting towards people that they can suicide, you can get in jail for that you narcissistic fuck. Thanks to this, you ruined many people's days (about 50,000,000). Good day to you you fucking cunt

You did not have to take the damn game down.

This is going overboard. Over a million people have downloaded GD on the Play Store alone. You think 200 people is gonna work? And if it was uploaded by not the real creator of the song, I'd hope they'd give credit. If they didn't, then I'm not happy. I'm sort of on both sides but mostly GD, because this is an outrage.
