Not bad.

The 4-5-6 idea is quite original - I haven't seen anyone come up with that division. There's a bit of an unsteady beginning; I'd suggest going with the two-note sequence first (rather than begin on one note). I began with the impression that it was going to be the same throughout - yes, they were the same chords throughout, but you built up the piece quite well.

The filmgrain at the back is really nice and adds to the atmosphere. The piece has a good climax and a good end. And when it does get louder, there is some underlying tension, as if someone were to walk out and do some things hurriedly on a rainy night.

If this were YouTube, I'd like this. I guess that should be enough to say it's a good piece.

Um...

The percussions stay quite true to the original, and perhaps a bit to the NSMB Wii version, but several parts sound a bit off key.

I congratulate your attempt on doing an a capella version of this theme, though - it's not something that many people actually attempt. Work on your pitching, and this song might just get its wow factor back.

Honestly...

For a film score, this would work quite well. I love the syncopation - it's very typical of ragtime, and I can imagine it in a short black-and-white film. ^_^

I came across this because I thought to myself, surely a ragtime experiment coming from you would not sound terrible. And no, it was far from terrible. Some parts were repetitive, but hey, weren't early pop songs about the same? The only thing was that the ending sounded a bit chaotic, but the rest of the piece was a joy to listen to.

VooDooCompositions responds:

Thank you :) I agree about the ending actually. To be honest, I had written this before I started studying much theory ect. I just studied a few ragtime scores and cranked this out as practice. I'm glad you liked as much as you did, however :) Thank you again.

Simply beautiful.

This piece has the expression that a lot of pieces don't seem to have. Ten, coming from a musician who submits in this genre. Keep up the good work!

Thank you! It means a lot to hear that from other musicians! I'm really glad that I can write something that is considered beautiful and thought provoking.

I get the idea behind the piece, but...

The chords aren't really the best used with the melody in this one, and neither is the pad by itself (or the strings with the pad). I trust, that if you keep the melody, and use chords which fit it more, it'll really sound like a sad homecoming piece.

I know I'll have to rate this piece down, but I'll give you this: you've got ideas, and really good ones at that. Try building up on them, and you'll shine!

Thanks for the review, I'm trying to figure out MIDI, VSTi s and synthesizing. I'm afraid I'm not to good at it yet. Alot of my previous work was made with samples but I want to start making something purely my own. Maybe I can take music along with law in college? xD

Okay, here goes.

It began quite well and ended quite well - the synthesised winds, the pad and the bells add to the ambience. Your chord work seems to be largely alright. The horns could definitely be turned down. The flute seems like a good addition, but it could do with a bit of tweaking. The flute melody seems a bit uncertain with the chords, but otherwise, it seems okay.

Dissonnance works well in places with the piece, but be sure not to overdo it. Build up on your harmony and instrument choice, and you'll be on your way.

Thanks for your review, I appreciate it when people aren't afraid to really do their best to help out and share their thoughts :)

It's alright, I trust.

It sounds largely good, but it could do with a bit of expression, hence minus two stars. The ending, however, is superb, and I really, really love it.
The 3/4 time and the feel of this remind me of a Hymmnos song called EXEC_HARVESTASYA/. Please, do listen to it when you have the chance!

Lovely.

This, friends, THIS is what I call piano sustain and chords done well.

ZuneInc responds:

Thanks :)

Sweet ^_^

I'm a percussion fanatic myself, and I love the way you built up on this. I can't point out any particular weaknesses here yet, but oh well. It's a nice piece - don't you forget that!

(I could picture myself drumming to it, really. ^_^)
